Turnip Gratin

My husband LOVES turnips.  Like seriously loves them, they are probably one of his favorite foods.  And before the naysayers get on here with their negative turnip talk, stuff it!  These things are awesome, you don’t know what you’re missing out on!  Especially with this recipe….tons of cheese and cream makes everything better!!

His old favorite turnip recipe was a spicy/sweet variety and I have to say, this has bumped that recipe right off of the favorite shelf!  It’s amazing.  AMAZING!

Turnip Gratin
Recipe from: The Pioneer Woman Cooks

Ingredients:
4 turnips, peeled and sliced VERY thinly
3-4 cloves garlic, minced
2 cups Gruyère cheese, grated (poor people like me can use Jarlsberg or some other form of Swiss)
6 tbsp butter
chicken broth
heavy cream
salt and pepper to taste

Method:
Preheat oven to 375.

In a cast iron skillet, melt 2-3 tbsp butter over med-low heat.  Place a single layer of turnips over the butter and lightly salt.

Sprinkle a little garlic and a couple of tablespoons butter (optional) over the turnips.  Add a layer of shredded cheese, then repeat all of the layers twice more.

Drizzle a healthy splash of broth over the turnips.  Do the same with the heavy cream.  Top off with the remaining cheese and salt and pepper.  Bake 20 minutes or until fork-tender (it took more like thirty or so for me!).
